The Sequoias Portola Valley (SPV) staff member who tested positive last week is on the mend. The other SPV staff member who was diagnosed mid-April is doing well at home. These were unrelated cases in separate departments.

I have good news! The two Sequoia Living staff members who have been impacted by COVID-19 are both doing well. Our Western Park Apartments employee is looking forward to returning to work this week. Our Sequoias Portola Valley (SPV) staff member is feeling better and is continuing to isolate at home. Thankfully, that employee had last worked at SPV on Friday, March 27, which we feel curtailed any additional cases.
Every day, Sequoia Living employees go the extra mile to keep our residents, customers, and staff safe and cared for. Sara McVey, Sequoia Living's President and CEO, created this short video to say thank you to our Sequoia Superheroes!
Even during these uncertain times, there is no shortage of generosity and kindness here at Sequoia Living. Each day, our residents, customers and staff are lifting each other up with smiles, gratitude, and good cheer.
Sequoia Living, formerly NCPHS, operates life care residential communities. We are a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the experience of aging for older adults in Northern California. For over 60 years, we have been a part of your communities; San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin. Sequoia Living consists of 1,000 residents and 700 staff. Our staff and residents are your neighbors who have frequented your business, know your staff and in some cases, have taken care of your loved ones in our skilled nursing, assisted living and memory care departments.
Because I work with amazing people, I often get asked, “How are you doing Sara?” Well, today is Wednesday, April 1st, and it’s hard to believe our new normal involves things like social distancing, sheltering in place, and looking sideways at the person next to us who coughed.
We were just notified that despite our extensive precautionary measures, an employee at one of our Affordable Housing communities, Western Park Apartments (WPA), has tested positive for COVID-19. The last time the employee was at work was the morning of Tuesday, March 24. The employee is following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s protocol and is currently self-quarantined at home under the care of a physician and is exhibiting only mild symptoms.
We are taking extra measures, beyond what is currently mandated, for the peace of mind, health, and well-being of Residents, Customers, and Staff of Sequoia Living. Ask us anything at Covid-19Questions@sequoialiving.org.
Coronavirus/COVID-19 is pushing all of us at Sequoia Living to be creative, flexible and resilient—and together, we are rising to the challenge. Even during this difficult time, Sequoia Living staff are providing an outstanding level of service and kindness to residents, customers, amily members, and each other. Thank you for all that you do.
As of today, the following Action Plan captures the most up to date information enabling us to be proactive in adopting practices designed to keep Residents, Customers, and Staff safe. We will continue to work closely with our Medical Directors and other Regulatory Agencies to update and refine this Action Plan.
COVID-19 has changed our daily lives in unprecedented ways, from where we travel to how we interact with our friends and loved ones. This pandemic requires us to be resilient, dedicated, cautious, and compassionate. It challenges us to work together and to support one another.
Experience is the reward of aging. And for us at Sequoia Living, it’s what we celebrate every day. We connect with the life experiences our residents and clients bring to us, leveraging our own six decades of service to older adults, to create new experiences that are joyful and life-affirming.
In the 1950s, NCPHS was founded by people who wanted to bring a new concept in senior living into existence. The concept was life care and the result was The Sequoias–Portola Valley. Now, almost sixty years later, that seed of an idea has bloomed into the wide array of residential communities and services offered by NCPHS. As the sixth CEO of NCPHS, it is a pleasure and privilege to carry on this tradition.
n Tuesday, October 17, residents, board members, community members, vendors, and staff gathered at Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club in Menlo Park for the 15th Annual NCPHS Gala, hosted by The Sequoias Portola Valley. In the spirit of the event’s theme, “All That Jazz,” the reception opened with music by pianist Nancy Deussen and delicious wine, cocktails, and appetizers. Many attendees took advantage of the warm fall weather and the gorgeous views of the golf course from the deck.
In the heart of the Tenderloin, a caring, creative community is blossoming. Every other Wednesday, older adults gather at the San Francisco Senior Center's Downtown Center for “Blooms in Your Room,” a flower arranging workshop led by community outreach coordinator Ilene “Sweetie” Shapiro. Over smiles and conversation, seniors create vibrant bouquets of sunflowers, tulips, gladiolas, carnations, roses, and other flowers donated by Trader Joe’s. By the end of each session, each participant has a beautiful handmade arrangement to take home in a vase provided by the Center. Every two weeks, participants are invited to bring their vases back to the Center to refill them with fresh blooms.
Tamalpais residents and staff celebrated the community’s 50th anniversary with a week-long extravaganza in early June. Activities included a champagne toast, a concert by their Women’s Chorus, a Tamalpais history presentation, and a Tamalpais Spirit Day.
After 19 months, the extensive renovations project at Town Park Towers (TPT), NCPHS’ affordable housing community in San Jose, is nearing the finish line—and the results are outstanding!
This annual report from Northern California Presbyterian Homes and Services contains a wealth of information: a review of noteworthy events of calendar year 2013, a summary of financial performance, photos of our Board members, and snapshots of the facilities that house our residents. But what sets 2013 apart is the completion of the first year of a five-year strategic plan.
Northern California Presbyterian Homes and Services will, within its human resources and financial capabilities, provide organizational structure and leadership to meet the needs and improve the quality of life of older persons from all economic levels and varied cultural backgrounds through diversified operations which offer housing and programs of physical, social, health, and spiritual care.
2015 was a year of progress and innovation throughout NCPHS. From meeting key milestones in our affordable housing renovations to implementing new technologies that streamline systems in our CCRCs, our accomplishments this year enable us to offer even more options for seniors we serve.
To celebrate the theme of this year’s annual report, “The Art of Aging Well,” this report features artwork created by residents of our affordable housing communities and San Francisco Senior Center members.
Residents, staff, board members, vendors and friends gathered on October 18 at the St. Francis Yacht Club for the 14th annual NCPHS Gala, an evening of dining, dancing, and entertainment to raise funds for Bay Area seniors in need.
