It’s time to reflect on your retirement lifestyle. Look in the rearview mirror and review what’s working well, or not.

“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”  – C.S. Lewis

As you say, “Bye-bye 2022, and hello 2023,” set aside time to reflect on what you’d like to do differently in 2023.

Are you looking for fulfillment? Do you desire a more joy-filled life? Or, do you want to incorporate exercise into your daily routine to reduce your hip pain? It’s time to improve your emotional and physical well-being, and create a happier, healthier future.

Ask yourself these 3 questions:

  1. Am I ready to move past limiting beliefs and shift to a more optimistic mindset?
  2. How can I redefine myself and grow?
  3. Is downsizing and finding freedom my goal?

Check out these TIPS on finding clarity in retirement.

A Milestone – Retirement

Retirement should be a time of exploration, freedom, and re-definement. A time to reexamine or reevaluate who you’d like to become. For some, lack of structure and too much freedom can lead to confusion and the loss of an identity that comes with a career.

Do not fret, find clarity by asking yourself the following questions:

  1. Who are you now that you’re a retiree?
  2. What are you passionate about?
  3. What are your main priorities?
  4. Where do you want to go?

Your words and perspective shape your narrative. They shape your life and even your future. Another way to do this is to think about the situation from the perspective of 10 years from now. How will your future self be happier, more fulfilled, better cared for? Start with the outcome insight and work backwards to make positive changes in 2023.

Remember Henry Ford’s famous quote, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t–you’re right”.

Optimistic Mindset

The internal narrative, the stories we tell ourselves, can gradually become our detriment. To begin shifting your mindset to a more optimistic set of beliefs, you can utilize a concept called “reframing the narrative.” One way to reframe your beliefs is by flipping it on its head to help improve your well-being.

Here’s a quick exercise you can implement to demolish self-limiting beliefs. Take a plain sheet of paper and draw a line down the middle. On one side write down your limiting belief, then on the opposite side write why it is not true. Boom! You have now reframed your narrative, keep going. What changes are necessary to create a happier and healthier future?

Start the Conversation About the Future, Retirement Living

Evaluating your living situation with fresh eyes can often provide clarity. For this reason, visits during the holidays can reveal a great deal. In many cases, age-related changes can happen rather quickly for older adults, and holiday gatherings offer an opportunity to reassess your needs.

Families may not always see eye-to-eye when planning for retirement living and future healthcare needs. Deciding what is best for you and your family can be challenging, especially as you grow older.

If you don’t know where to start the conversation with loved ones, try this:

  • Identify the things that are making life at home more difficult.
  • Be open and honest about future care needs and changes in health.
  • Discuss the benefits of community living versus your alternative options, like home care.
