Sequoia Living’s Intergenerational Program Earns National Recognition

Intergenerational Program | Sequoia Living, program award

The Intergenerational Program brings seniors together with younger generations to share stories, build friendships, and form bonds that span decades of life experience.

A Calling to Serve Across Generations

For Bronwyn Peterson, manager of Sequoia Living's Intergenerational Program, part of our Community Services division, the path to working with older adults was not what she expected. She began her career supporting preschoolers with autism through Special Education and Early Intervention Programs. She earned an undergraduate degree in Psychology, and later completed a graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. She envisioned a career in private practice until a pivotal internship changed her trajectory.

"I fell in love with the work and the older population," Bronwyn recalls of her time working with seniors living with dementia. "I knew then that I wanted older adults to be the focus of my career."

In 2012, Bronwyn joined Sequoia Living as a Resident Services Coordinator, where she spent eight years building deep, meaningful relationships with residents. When a colleague encouraged her to apply for the Intergenerational Program leadership role in 2021, she felt it was a natural fit, as her experience with both young people and older adults had prepared her perfectly for the position.

Recognition of a Program that Changes Lives

Since taking on the role, Bronwyn has led Sequoia Living's Intergenerational Program with creativity, dedication, and heart. The program brings residents together with younger generations to share stories, build friendships, and form bonds that span decades of life experience.

In 2024, the program was honored nationally with the Program of Distinction designation from Generations United, a nonprofit dedicated to improving lives through intergenerational collaboration. The recognition highlights programs that demonstrate innovation, sustainability, and lasting impact.

"I'm so proud of this recognition," Bronwyn said. "It validates the work we've been doing and inspires us to continue growing."

However, for Bronwyn, the true rewards are found in the stories and memories that are created. She recalls Ernest, a resident who served as a mentor to a group of boys for two consecutive years. At their end-of-year celebration, Ernest surprised each boy with a framed photo of him on his Harley motorcycle. He then revved the bike for them in the garage, leaving the boys wide-eyed with excitement. "It was such a sweet, unforgettable moment," Bronwyn shares. "That's the kind of connection this program makes possible."

Building a Future of Connection

Bronwyn's passion for fostering connections extends beyond her role. As part of Sequoia Living's Never Stop campaign, she shares that she'll "never stop doing TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) and cat rescue," reflecting her lifelong commitment to care and compassion.

Looking ahead, she envisions the Intergenerational Program expanding into Sequoia Living's Senior Centers and Life Plan Communities. "Every resident deserves the joy that comes from these meaningful connections," Bronwyn said. And while most people imagine children or teens as program participants, Bronwyn emphasizes that even adults can join. "As long as there's a 20-year age gap, people ages 1 to 40+ can participate."

Her advice for others who want to have an impact? Start small. "Making a difference doesn't have to be huge or complicated. Something as simple as smiling and saying hello to a resident each day builds connection over time."

For Bronwyn, the Program of Distinction designation is not just a milestone but a reminder that Sequoia Living's mission, creating homes and services for healthy, joyful aging, is being lived out every day. "Hearing residents and younger participants speak so highly of their experiences is wonderful," she says. "This work is deeply fulfilling and enjoyable. I can't imagine being happy in a job where I don't get to connect with people."
