OurEnvironment

Health and Longevity

At Sequoia Living we are committed to being a great place to live and work. As a mission-focused organization, it is our purpose to improve the quality of life for the people we serve, and create healthier and more resilient communities.

We believe in co-creating sustainable solutions to address environmental impacts in alignment with our residents, partners, and staff. Together, we reduce our impact on our planet by implementing environmental initiatives to reduce, reuse, recycle and save our environment today.

Through our environmental stewardship programs, we cut down our buildings’ impact on the planet and curtail our carbon footprint while continuously looking for ways to improve and operate more efficiently.

Here is a snapshot of Sequoia Living’s environmental initiatives and partnerships. We are focused on four primary areas: waste, energy, water usage, and education.

goats

WASTE MANAGEMENT

We partner with Morrison Living to manage purchasing, inventory, and waste reduction in the kitchens of The Sequoias Portola Valley, The Sequoias San Francisco, The Tamalpais Marin, and Viamonte at Walnut Creek. We strive to divert 90% of waste from landfills through dining management.

Each of our four life plan communities and three affordable housing communities takes the time to separate recyclables and compost from going into the landfill.

Our composting process is a collaboration between Sequoia Living staff and residents. We make sure composting bins are available for each apartment, in the dining area of each continuing care retirement community, and in other common spaces. Education is a big part of composting to ensure we know what materials go into which bin.

Our staff make efforts to purchase only what is necessary and recycle paper, batteries, and ink cartridges to keep them out of the landfill.

We partner with local goat herders to utilize these natural grazers and create defensible space. We implement environmentally friendly and sustainable methods of landscaping by utilizing goats. The goats consume grasses, shrubs, leaves, and other plants that grow in open fields and natural settings. They are an eco-friendly and viable alternative to lawn mowers and human-powered machinery, reducing noise and air pollution throughout the communities.

Energy Conservation

ENERGY CONSERVATION

Since 2006, we have been generating nearly 80% of the electrical energy needs of The Sequoias Portola Valley, The Sequoias San Francisco, and The Tamalpais Marin through co-generation. By utilizing natural fuel and thermal energy in a sequential process we co-generate heat and electricity. This process significantly reduces carbon emissions and improves energy efficiency.

We continuously look for ways to improve and operate our communities. The Sequoias Portola Valley is in the process of executing our largest and greenest project to date, with 2,600 solar panels being installed throughout the community. Once completed and fully operational, the solar project will produce nearly 105% of the electricity needed to power the community.

Leading the way in energy efficiency programs, we strive to create sustainable environments and have retrofitted our four life plan communities and three affordable housing communities with low voltage and LED lighting fixtures.

WATER USAGE

We’ve partnered with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and local municipalities to ensure each time we remodel or retrofit an affordable housing community, we are exceeding the minimum standards in efficiency. Each community has been updated with water efficiency fixtures including low flow faucets, showers, and toilets to reduce water consumption and energy.

When evaluating our landscaping, we are conscientious about foliage, water use, and maintenance to make sure we are making efforts at conserving our natural resources. Whenever possible, we utilize the moisture in the air allowing plants to thrive in their natural environments.

Our newest, award-winning LEED Gold community, Viamonte at Walnut Creek, was intentionally designed with drought tolerant plants and a water efficient irrigation system. On-site stormwater flow-to bioretention basins, flow-thru planters, and self-treating permeable pavements contribute to the sustainability of the neighborhood and natural environment.

EDUCATION

In partnership with Senior Services for Northern California, the philanthropic foundation of Sequoia Living, we invest in educating our residents, program participants, staff members, and the general public on energy, pollution, waste, and more.

We do this through our Legacy Talks webinar series and informational materials about global warming and climate change. Watch the recordings.

Our residents participate in lectures, educational seminars, and conversations that support environmental stewardship. We value each of our residents’ wisdom and passion. They are the best resource we have towards getting the word out on building a healthier environment for generations to come.
