Sequoia Living Named Development Partner for Historic Heritage on the Marina Redevelopment

A new redevelopment proposal for Heritage on the Marina outlines a vision that balances historic preservation with the evolving needs of older adults, while introducing Sequoia Living as the nonprofit development partner for the project.

Located in San Francisco’s Marina District, the campus is home to the landmark Julia Morgan Building, one of the city’s most significant historic structures. Originally completed in 1925 for the San Francisco Ladies’ Protection and Relief Society, the building was designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan, California’s first licensed female architect and the visionary behind Hearst Castle.

The proposed redevelopment would preserve the historic Julia Morgan Building while modernizing the surrounding campus, expanding senior living residences, and enhancing services designed to support future generations of older adults.

The announcement comes as the Marina neighborhood continues broader conversations about growth and redevelopment. While nearby housing proposals have generated significant public debate, the Heritage on the Marina plan represents a different approach, one centered on preserving an important piece of San Francisco’s architectural heritage while thoughtfully reinvesting in an existing senior living community.

Heritage on the Marina says the project is intended to modernize aging facilities, strengthen long-term sustainability, and create an environment that better supports residents for decades to come.
