Never Stop Traveling: Andrea’s Story at The Tamalpais Marin

A Conversation That Changed the Course

Andrea Tapia, a resident of The Tamalpais Marin, was not planning on moving. After 32 years in her Novato home, and decades before that in San Francisco and Philadelphia, life felt steady. Familiar. “Just fine,” as she puts it.

Then came a routine meeting with her financial advisor.

He looked at her numbers and pointed something out; she had spent years saving, but had never really started spending.

“What are you saving for?” he asked.

“My old age,” said Andrea.

His response was simple, and it stayed with her.

The future she had been preparing for was no longer somewhere ahead; it had arrived, and with it came the freedom to choose what came next. All those years of saving now allowed her financial freedom, but what to do with it?

Moving When It Felt Right

Andrea doesn’t overthink her biggest decisions. “The best decisions of my life are the ones I didn’t agonize over,” said Andrea. This became one of them.

Within days of that conversation, she began looking at communities. Within weeks, she chose The Tamalpais Marin. Within months, she had sold her home, handled much of the transition herself, and moved in.

It all happened quickly, but to her, it didn’t feel rushed. “When things are meant to be, things fall into place.”

A Life That Moves More Easily

Since moving to The Tamalpais Marin, something shifted, not in what she does, but in how easy it feels to do it. In less than a year, Andrea has taken three international trips.

“I just pack and leave,” said Andrea. There’s no long checklist before she goes. No house to coordinate. No errands to run before locking the door. When she returns, everything is as she left it, clean, cared for, and ready. “And I come back, and my apartment is clean, and my plants are watered.”

She doesn’t have to ease back into life. She simply continues.

When asked what she never wants to stop doing, Andrea doesn’t hesitate; it’s travel. And now, it’s no longer something she has to work around. It fits naturally into her life, and she couldn’t be happier.

Still Living on Her Own Terms

Andrea is quick to point out that her independence has not changed. She still drives. Still visits Novato. Still spends time in The City. She comes and goes as she pleases.

“Independent living for me is just independent living.” What has changed is everything around that independence.

Andrea can sleep in without worrying about meals. She doesn’t need to grocery shop or plan her days the same way. There’s a rhythm to life that feels more open, less tied to responsibility.

“I don’t have to worry about food, I’m not food shopping, I haven’t been in a Safeway for, like, ever,” she happily said

Giving her space to focus on what she actually wants to do.

What She Didn’t Expect

What Andrea didn’t anticipate was how much the community would matter. “This community has just been amazing,” said Andrea. “I’m still learning from people.”

There’s an energy to being surrounded by others who are still engaged, still curious, still living fully in their own ways. “It’s been so enriching to me. Something I never expected.”

A Decision She Trusts

When asked to describe how she feels now, Andrea keeps it simple. “Happy to be here,” and

“Good decision.”

That’s how Andrea has always approached life. She listens to her instincts. She moves when something feels right. She doesn’t overcomplicate it.

This time, that instinct led her to a place where life feels easier, more flexible, and more open.

A place where she can keep traveling. Keep exploring. Keep living fully, on her own terms.

At The Tamalpais Marin, Andrea didn’t step away from the life she knew.

She made room for more of it.
