Sequoia Living Coronavirus Update: June 26, 2020

Sequoia Trees

Case and Testing Highlights

Yesterday we received a positive COVID-19 test result for a staff person at The Sequoias Portola Valley. We are doing contact tracing and notifying individuals who may need to self-isolate. We will be deploying a third-party service to deep clean specified areas of the community.

The two Tamalpais staff members who recently tested positive are self- isolating and recovering at home. They are doing well. There are still zero resident cases of COVID-19 in our communities.

Since March, 547 staff members and 1079 residents have been tested for COVID-19. Our low numbers of positive cases are thanks to our COVID-19 Action Plan and the vigilance of staff and residents.

Staying Safe with High Tech

We have ordered three Skytron UV-C disinfection robots, which use high intensity ultraviolet light to destroy viruses such as COVID-19, norovirus, C.Diff, and influenza. They will be powerful tools against infection as our communities begin to open up.

Surveys and Sequoia Steps

Results from the staff survey will be shared next week. The deadline for CCRC resident surveys has been extended until July 1. Our Sequoia Step Plans are also being reviewed this week with residents.

SIP with Sara on Saturday, July 11

SIP (Shelter in Place) with Sara is back on Saturday, July 11. This will be a Zoom video call for CCRC residents, so there will be more opportunity for Q&A and conversation. Look for a Zoom meeting invite next week.

New Viamonte Video

This week, we released a Viamonte Update video that highlights some of the plans to make Viamonte’s activities, programs, and dining spaces both enjoyable and safe for new residents.

Grocery Delivery Gratitude

This is the final week of Sequoia Living’s grocery delivery program, which provided boxes of free groceries to Sequoia Living Affordable Housing residents during the Shelter-in-Place order. Many thanks to Morrison Living, Ken Yeung, Affordable Housing staff and Service Coordinators, Gina Rodriguez, Melissa Kinslow Parker, Paul Chilvers, David Madson, Dave Latina, staff and resident volunteers at The Sequoias San Francisco and Portola Valley, and Preferred Movers for making this possible.

Face Coverings Required in California

This is one of the best ways for us to safeguard ourselves and others. Face coverings are required to be worn in all public spaces.

Celebrating Pride

This weekend San Francisco celebrates Pride. Please join me in celebrating the LGBTQ community, their lives, and their contributions—not just this weekend, but always.

Strong Storms, Deep Roots

A dear colleague emailed me a wonderful quote from Dolly Parton: “Storms make trees take deeper roots.” It made me think of how all of us are responding with resilience and grace to COVID.

When a tree sways in a gust of wind, it causes the tree’s roots to grow deeper into the soil. The deeper the roots grow, the stronger the tree becomes. It isn’t just one storm that helps a tree grow stronger—it’s multiple storms over time.

Like a tree blowing in the breeze, when we respond with flexibility and openness to life’s storms, we become stronger and more rooted.

With gratitude to you all for being resilient, digging deep, and staying strong,

Sara McVey
