Growing Up with Sequoia Living
Teamwork, accountability, and caring are the three values Sourabh Singh shares with his co-workers at Sequoia Living. This is why he has dedicated his entire career to working with seniors.
The well-being of residents is a top priority at all Sequoia Living communities. However, the word ‘community’ represents more than just a building of older adults. It encompasses those who live, work, and visit – because everyone feels like a family at a Life Plan Community. And that is true for Sourabh, who has worked in his community since 2000.
While in high school, Sourabh’s first job was as a server in the dining room at The Tamalpais Marin. He quickly found he loved working with older people, inspiring him to start his career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
The more he connected with residents and built stronger relationships with their families, the clearer the idea of dedicating his life to nursing became. He believed: “I can do more. I am still young. Let’s go for nursing… let’s see what the future holds.”
Building Connections and Making a Difference
Getting started in a career in the medical field can be daunting. Luckily, he had the support of his co-workers, supervisors, and his mother, a retired nurse.
In order to attend nursing school during the day, he transitioned to working nights as a receptionist in his community. Balancing night duties with homework and nursing school was a challenging endeavor. His motivation to become a nurse kept Sourabh going.
Compassion and empathy are traits of Sourabh that residents, their families, and staff appreciate. Being a nurse means building close, meaningful connections with everyone he interacts with daily. He finished his education and became a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in 2010.
“Once I became a nurse, I had the chance to be closer to residents and the families,” said Sourabh. “To make them feel better… it’s all about how you take care of your residents.” His desire to consistently provide excellent care and be a source of support for families keeps the passion alive, creating a sense of purpose that goes beyond the workplace. Working with people in their later years is tremendously rewarding and fulfilling for Sourabh.
He shared a touching experience about a community resident admitted to the Health Center after a fall caused a hip fracture. Due to their strong connection, he was thankful for the opportunity to take care of the resident. “The days and months go by, and the resident got better… after two or three months, she was discharged being able to walk once again,” said Sourabh. “That showed me that I could make things better for patients and residents.” The experience showcased the profound impact compassionate caregivers have on the lives of those they’re caring for.

Providing Support and Comfort to Residents and Their Families
His commitment to the residents’ well-being went beyond the routine; he became a source of support, encouragement, and companionship. By helping to address the residents’ physical and emotional needs, Sourabh played a crucial role in their recovery.
“When you take good care of residents, their families appreciate it,” said Sourabh. “I’ve had family members specifically look for me, wanting to ensure I’ll be there for their mom or dad. It’s rewarding to know they feel comforted by the care I provide.”
Rooted in wellness, Sourabh’s role extends beyond medical care; it involves providing a sense of assurance to families and the well-being of residents. Knowing that a caring and compassionate nurse oversees a resident during their stay at the Health Center provides peace of mind to families. Sourabh has discovered that the more he invests in caring for residents, the more families seek him out, trusting him to be there for their loved ones.
“I love my job. And I’m good at what I do,” said Sourabh. “It keeps me going, and I never want to stop.”
Sourabh shares three tips to help you live a longer and more fulfilled life:
- Stay active – use the fitness center or go for walks with their friends
- Socialize – talk to people and engage with others as much as possible
- Keep your mind sharp – play games and do puzzles
“Everyone will tell residents to exercise, eat right, and socialize. It helps keep your brain going,” said Sourabh. “We have residents that live beyond 100 years old.”
