From CNA to RN: Carmen’s Journey in Senior Living

Angelou’s timeless words capture Carmen’s natural approach to caregiving. She leaves a lasting impact on residents by building strong, trusting relationships with them. She finds a deep sense of fulfillment in understanding their needs while supporting their health. This creates a sense of comfort and trust that enriches their overall care.

A Heart for Care
Carmen was drawn to service work. As a teenager in high school, she became a certified nursing assistant (CNA), knowing that she wanted to be a nurse someday. Now, she is a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) on her way to becoming a registered nurse (RN).
In senior living, LVNs and RNs are important in providing quality health care, yet their responsibilities differ greatly. LVNs typically handle general care, including monitoring vital signs, administering medications, and assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs). In contrast, RNs have more advanced training. RNs can perform a wider range of medical interventions and develop or manage care plans. LVNs and RNs ensure residents get personalized care for their specific health needs. Carmen Loves Her Job
“I love listening to the residents and learning about their families and careers,” says Carmen. “The residents are kind, and they love to give me advice.”
When asked about her most memorable experience, she mentions, “I changed departments and had not seen a resident for nearly five years. She was at the end of life, so I went to say goodbye.” Carmen was pleasantly surprised to find the resident recognized her!
Despite the resident’s memory-related changes, Carmen believes her genuine interest in the resident’s life made a difference. The resident told Carmen, “I know you. You are a kind person.”
The resident left a lasting impression on Carmen, reinforcing her passion for caregiving. Always a go-getter, Carmen is excited to continue growing her skills to support her teammates and residents better.
Never Stop Growing in Healthcare
Sequoia Living’s ‘Never Stop Growing’ philosophy embodies the belief that lifelong learning is embracing new experiences essential to continuous personal growth, regardless of age or stage of life. Carmen exemplifies this philosophy, demonstrating that each day is an opportunity to become a better version of oneself.
After two decades in healthcare, Carmen is working on achieving her dream of being an RN. This is made possible partly through the Employee Scholarship Fund, which provides qualified Sequoia Living staff with the funds necessary to enroll in education or training programs. Scholarship recipients receive a percentage reimbursement for tuition, fees, and books. The scholarship is a program of Senior Services for Northern California (SSNC), Sequoia Living’s philanthropic foundation.
Feels Right at Home
“When you are a member of a family, they take care of you,” said Carmen. Guided by strong family values, Carmen finds working with older adults and a great team rewarding. “Receiving the scholarships tells me I’m part of the family, and I hope to help residents even more now that I’m getting a higher education.”
Carmen feels lucky and grateful to be a part of The Sequoias. The funds allow her to financially support her family and concentrate on her degree without worrying about debt after graduation.
