What the World’s Longest-Living People Have in Common

Triple-digit birthdays are becoming more common. In the United States, there are over 100,000 centenarians, with projections suggesting that total will quadruple over the next 30 years.
Just 50 years ago, there were only about 5,000.
It’s proof that living longer isn’t simply due to genetics.
So if it’s not our genes determining our lifespan, what is?
The Habits that Contribute to a Longer Life
“Blue Zones,” regions where people regularly live past 100, don’t just have one thing in common; they share several characteristics that researchers have attributed to longer life expectancies.
1- They Maintain An Active Lifestyle
Yes, those who live longer are more active, but the key here is an active lifestyle.
These communities incorporate activity into their life, not the other way around. They’re not spending hours at the gym. They’re walking to visit friends, they’re tending the garden. Movement is ingrained into their routines, not something they check off their to-do list.
2- They Prioritize Relationships
What if there were a pill to decrease loneliness, depression, and chronic illness, with no side effects.
Well, there’s no magic pill, but these are the benefits typically experienced by those who maintain strong social connections.
These connections don’t need to be complicated. Sharing a meal with friends, visiting with family, and participating in the community all lead to increased emotional and mental health.
3- They Have a Sense of Purpose
In Okinawa, moai is that deep emotional and social connection formed through tight relationships.
They also have a word for a deep sense of purpose: ikigai. It’s your reason for waking up in the morning.
When you have a sense of purpose, your overall well-being increases. That’s the mental power of finding meaning in your life.
A career will only get you to 100+ for half your life. The rest can be filled with volunteering, learning, caring for others, being creative, pursuing passions… anything that brings you daily joy and fulfillment.
4- They Continue Learning and Growing
Learning not only contributes to a sense of purpose, but it also exercises the brain.
When you learn a new skill or hobby or attend a new class, you challenge your mind in a way that supports cognitive health.
Staying curious leads to continuous growth, which leads to longevity.
5- They Manage Stress
When stressful situations occur (and they will), how we get through them can lead us down the path to longevity.
Through rest and reflection, these communities incorporate stress-relieving activities into their daily routines. That can look like prayers, meditation, spending time outdoors, or visiting with loved ones. Small pauses throughout the day to check in on your mental health lead to big outcomes.
6- Their Environment Supports Healthy Choices
Living in a place where walkability is low means you’re less likely to spend time walking. If you live far from close relationships, you’re less likely to spend time with those people.
Where you live can affect your longevity, either increasing or decreasing your life span.
Because if you live near friends, can easily access healthy meals, and can easily incorporate activity into your day, you’re more likely to see those things through.
Where we live often shapes our habits.
Daily Choices Affect Years of Life
Ultimately, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all formula for longevity — although staying consistent seems to be the likeliest way to increase lifespan.
It’s a daily commitment. It’s small, intentional choices to move regularly, stay connected, continue learning, manage stress, and find purpose in everyday life.
Because what’s a longer life without purpose, joy, and fulfillment anyway?
