Discovering the Artist in You

Arts at The Sequoias Portola Valley | an elderly couple sitting down and painting

Written by Brenda G., resident

Those who come to The Sequoias Portola Valley will find themselves among residents who are professional artists as well as those who are experiencing art for the first time in years. The art program at The Sequoias is run for and by residents. It has proven to be an inspirational and fun place to create. Many residents report having built new friendships while working on individual or group projects.

The artistic endeavors residents enjoy include painting, drawing, watercolor, charcoal, pastel, oil, pottery, sculpting, woodworking, seasonal projects, papier mâché and decoupage.

One of our favorite programs is “Paint and Sip”…an easel, a canvas, a paint palette, a brush, and a glass of wine with friends. Yes, art happens here, and we love the camaraderie.

Another popular activity is joining fellow art enthusiasts for outings to Bay area artists’ studios. The Sequoias monthly calendar lists all scheduled trips to major museums in San Francisco and San Jose. Transportation is provided.

The art room is a learning environment, free for residents at all levels of experience to explore, create, enjoy, and discover something they did not know about art or about themselves before they entered. The Sequoia Gallery exhibits change monthly. All exhibited art is created by residents.

The art room is open daily, allowing residents to use the space and art supplies freely. Drop-in workshops are offered, allowing residents to learn new techniques. Sign-up classes are offered, which enable residents to pursue their artistic interests in depth.
